On a still spring day when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, the view of the temple across its reflecting pond is said to be ravishingly beautiful. It is a paradigm of peace and inner harmony—the Buddhist ideal. Whether beautiful or repulsive, uplifting or destructive, the effects of human habitation are everywhere to be seen across the whole surface of the earth.
